Honours Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Specialization in ophthalmology in 1989 via the Spanish MIR system at the Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer and the Escuela Profesional de Oftalmología de Barcelona (Professional School of Ophthalmology of Barcelona), associated with the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery in 2000 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Department of Surgical Specialties, with his dissertation: “Intrastromal astigmatogenic implants” with the distinction “cum laude”, in cooperation with the Instituto Barraquer
Professional Experience
Assistant doctor of general surgery at the Valle de Hebrón, Hospital and of ophthalmology at the Instituto Barraquer.
Doctor of ophthalmology via the Spanish MIR system at the Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer.
At the end of the stay via the MIR system in 1989, he was invited by the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami (FL, USA) to work at the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center of the McKnight Vision Center (Director: Jean Marie Parel) on investigation techniques with animals, biopolymers, keratometry, refractive surgery and lasers. Also, he received training at the same center in the fields of advanced cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and IOL implants), glaucoma surgery and keratoplasty surgery.
In 1990, by examination he obtained a post as an assistant doctor at the Ophthalmology Service of the Hospital Sagrat Cor de Barcelona, teaching unit of the University of Barcelona, and of the Catalanpublic network. Furthermore, he was an assistant doctor of the Hospital Central de l’Aliança. He handed in his notice voluntarily at the end of 1995.
From 1991 to 1994, he ran the Ophthalmology Service of the Clínica Barcelona and was the person in charge of the ophthalmology department of the Clínica Sant Josep de Barcelona from 1994 to 2000.
In 1989, he founded the Instituto Oftalmológico Vivar Badia and has been running it since then. The institute is a medium-sized center which works with different national and international institutions in order to coordinate complete or partial studies for the development and improvement of therapeutic systems and processes, mainly of the ophthalmic subspecialties. The emphasis is put on the doctor-patient relationship and on finding easier solutions to frequent pathologies. It maintains close relations with other national institutions with the same specialty such as the Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer, the Instituto Oftalmológico Gabriel Simón and the Institut Condal d’Oftalmologia.
Research Director R&D of the ophthalmology line at Bioner S.A.
Teaching Experience
While working at the Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer, he taught theoretical and practical courses to medical students from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and worked as an instructor of Experimental Surgery, chief resident, coordinator of the teaching program and assistance activities of the Institute Barraquer. He was also a member of the teaching commission of the Escuela Profesional de Oftalmología (professional school of ophthalmology).
Collaborator at the theoretical and practical ophthalmology classes for medical students of the Autonomous University of Barcelona at the teaching unit of the Hospital Sagrat Cor.
Cooperates as a guest lecturer at the Escola Universitaria de Óptica de Terrassa (College of Optics of Terrassa) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia for degree students as well as those taking the master’s degree, being a specialist in refractive surgery and pathophysiology of myopization.
Assistant lecturer of the Instituto Asclepios, Director Juan Carlos Aviles, teaching master’s degree students in Traditional Western Medicine at the Universities of Girona and Camilo José Cela de Madrid.
Research experience
Development of control methods of myopia, treatment of amblyopia, strabismus and nystagmus via modified auditory biofeedback systems and advanced contactology since 1989, cooperating with other optometric centers.
Since 1988, development of intrastromal implants for the treatment of astigmatism and keratoconus. In the 10th International Course of Ophthalmology (X. Curso Internacional de Oftalmología) of the Instituto Barraquer, we present the world’s first work of a sector of an intrastromal ring with the dissection of an interlamellar pocket. A work with animal testing was presented at the annual meeting of ARVO in 1996 in Fort Lauderdale (FL, USA).
Participation in the development of lasers for the treatment of glaucoma, specially titanium-sapphire lasers for the selective trabeculoplasty of low intensity in cooperation with SOLX Inc. of the Photonics Center of Boston University (Boston, MA), as well as the Holmium laser for the thermal scleroplasty for open-angle glaucoma in cooperation with Sunrise Technologies Inc.
Development of treatments for different stages of presbyopia. Regarding the incipient presbyopia, the Holmium laser (Sunrise Tech., FL) with the ring-shaped thermalscleroplasty technique was used. For advanced presbyopia, a lens replacement surgery with monofocal IOL implants and visual therapy with auditory biofeedback–in order to improve the visual acuity at short and medium distance – was chosen. The results of both works were presented at the 1st International Congress on Presbyopia (2006) of the International Society of Presbyopia.
Clinical testing with the treatment of keratoconus with fast recovery cross-linking without corneal de-epithelization in cooperation with Dr. Febrer Bowen.
Development of an artificial cornea with scleral implantation in cooperation with Bioner S.A., as well as scleral fibrointegration systems in the 3rd phase of animal testing, in cooperation with the Institut de Toxicologia, Faculty of Biology, University of Barcelona.
Clinical testing with intraocular lenses for low-vision, type IOLVIP, with a specialized visual therapy and auditory biofeedback. The first implantation of these lenses in Spain was carried out by us.
Clinical and surgical testing of intraocular lenses in order to improve the accommodation: 1.-pseudo-accommodative lenses Tetraflex of Lenstec, results presented at the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons) in 2009, Berlin: 2.-diffractive lenses without modified rings, Difractix (Imperial Medical Inc).
Clinical and surgical testing of implants for glaucoma, Implante Express (Alcon Inc), developing their own implantation technique that improves the results as it is our pioneering center regarding its use.
Development of techniques for the medical treatment of age-related macular degeneration in its dry form (AMD dry). The number of patients in which the disease develops leaving scars or degenerating in the wet form was reduced drastically, helping to maintain the visual acuity, thanks to the use of personalized techniques of nutritional pharmacology. The results are presented in specialized courses in different Spanish cities.
Protocol for the treatment of the retinal occlusive and optic nerve disease. Vein occlusions and ischemic optic neuropathies didn’t have any treatment until the introduction of a combination of protective vascular pharmaceuticals, anti-ischemics and anti-inflammatories with which the visual acuity and the visual field can be recovered. Ongoing study.
